Bird Grooming

  • Wing clips may or may not be appropriate for your bird depending on your lifestyle and interaction with your bird. A badly clipped, or asymmetrical wing clip can lead to injuries from crashing into the ground and from sharp feather shafts rubbing on the bird’s body. Talk to our team about weather a wing clip is the right option for your bird.

  • Our experienced team can assist your bird with all their nail trimming needs. Call us to book an appointment today.

  • Beak trims are performed in our hospital under general anaesthetic with a dental bur to file the beak gently into shape. Overgrown beaks may be a sign of injury or disease. We recommend your bird has a total wellness consultation prior to its first beak trim to determine the cause and best method of correction.

Preventative Medicine

  • Rabbits should be vaccinated against Calicivirus

    (Rabbit Haemorrhagic Disease Virus (RHDV))

Two types of Calicivirus are present in Australian rabbits, these are referred to as RHDV 1 and RHDV 2. These viruses generally cause sudden death in rabbits. They are highly contagious and can be spread by direct contact with infected rabbits through ocular and nasal secretions, faeces and urine, by contaminated persons, or equipment or by insects.

The vaccination Filavac® protects rabbits against both RHDV1 and RHDV2. A single does is effective and can be given from 10 weeks of age. Rabbits will require annual boosters to stay protected.

Rabbit vaccinations include a total wellness examination and dental check. Please call us on # to book your rabbit vaccination.

  • Desexing can be performed on your rabbit, rat, mouse, or guinea pig.

Desexing helps reduce unwanted behaviours such as territorial aggression between cage mates, and urine marking. Desexing also prevents unwanted pregnancies and protects against reproductive diseases such as mammary cancers, and uterine infections and tumours.

free wildlife care treatment for sick and injured animals Darwin

Free Wildlife Treatment

  • At Wild North Veterinary Hospital all wildlife brought in by members of the public will be treated free of charge. Wildlife patients are provided with pain relief and rehydration necessary for stabilisation before diagnostics are performed.

The most important factor in assessing wildlife is determining their ability to return to the wild post treatment. Wildlife patients must be 100% fit to have a good chance of surviving in the wild upon release. Severity of injury, time in care, species and sex are all factors which influence the decision to treat sick and injured wildlife.

All wildlife patients will receive a minimum diagnostic work up of x-rays, blood tests and faecal assessment, prior to release or being sent to a wildlife carer for rehabilitation.

As we have specialised equipment and experience in the treatment or birds, reptiles and small mammal patients, we are able to perform more advanced diagnostics and complicated surgeries such as fracture repairs and foreign body removals. Improving the release success of out native patients.

Dr Bec has been working with Australasian wildlife for over 20 years. In 2016 she obtained membership to the Australian and New Zealand Collage of Veterinary Science in the Australasian wildlife Medicine. This qualification is achieved by intensive examination by industry professionals. Dr Bec is the only veterinarian in the Northern Territory who has achieved this qualification.
